In the beginning a black coating, called PVD - Physical Vapor Deposition, also known as Ion plating - was applied to titanium products. The result was a thin black layer that kept none of titanium unique qualities, as it usually was not titanium. This solution is still used, and many black titanium rings are actually made by PVD process.
As we know, zirconium is a silver-grey color, and it earns its stark black appearance through heating process, in which a layer of hard black oxide grows on the metal. This black layer is much harder than raw zirconium, but it is very thin. To get this kind of oxide film more easily, Titanium, Niobium were added into Zirconium to form a new kind of alloy, which can obtain the black oxide at a lower temperature. This kind of Titanium Zirconium alloy was named black Titanium too. This kind of black oxide film obtained on the surface by the diffusion of oxygen, which can get an excellent attachment. In the meantime, the oxide film is a zirconia ceramics, which is the most strong ceramic, so this kind of black Titanium posses more excellent properties than PVD.
Our black Titanium is an alloy of Titanium and Zirconium and can be blackened in atmosphere for less than 10 minutes.
